Picking the Best Carry on Luggage with Wheels

If you are a frequent traveler you will probably not want to wait around for your bag to come around on the luggage carousel. When I check any luggage in, it is invariably the very last one to come on to the carousel! With this in mind, if you are someone who can travel reasonably light, a piece of carry on luggage with wheels is a great option. You can get off the flight, extend the handle on your carry on luggage, pull your bag through the terminal and be on your way to your destination before the baggage handlers have even had chance to unload the cargo hold.

Some things to consider when using carry on luggage with wheels are:

Size – Make sure that the bag including the wheels and handle is within the size limits allowed for carry on luggage for the airline that you are traveling with. Usually, the maximum size allowed into the aircraft cabin is 22 inches x 14 inches x 9 inches. Choose carefully to avoid having to check your bag in. Don’t assume, because the manufacturers have added a label with the dimensions on, that it will be accepted as hand luggage. The label may be stating the measurements of the internal space. Check yourself to make sure you can use the bag for the purpose you intended it for.

Expandable – If your carry on luggage with wheels is the expandable type, be very careful when packing that the final dimensions do not exceed the maximum allowed. If you buy a bag that is 6 inches wide but is expandable; by the time you have packed it could be 11 inches wide – in which case you would probably have to check it in. Even if it not an expandable bag but has an external pocket, be aware that stuffing it with a spare pair of shoes could well mean that it becomes too wide (i.e. more than 9 inches) and you find yourself having to check it in.

Overhead lockers – There is no guarantee that your bag will fit in the overhead locker when you board the aircraft.
Liquids – Remember, as you will not be checking any luggage in, to check the amount of liquids you are allowed to carry in your hand luggage. This includes any cosmetics and perfumes. I once had to forfeit some very expensive moisturizer because I had forgotten that it was in my wash bag and it was a 250ml size. Had I been at the airport sooner I cold have checked my bag in but I was too late to do that.

The carry on luggage with wheels has been a godsend for many frequent travelers and business travelers with the amount of time and hassle they have saved. There is no hanging around waiting for your half empty suitcase to arrive on the carousel. Choose your carry on luggage with wheels carefully and your air travel will hold no fears of lost luggage or the time wasted waiting for your case; you can get on your way before most people have even arrived at the baggage carousel.

Identify Your Own Carry On Luggage

Why should you identify carry-on luggage? After all, you’re carrying it with you…

Well, the first reason is because you have to. Airlines require that all luggage have proper identification. This is for carry-on bags as well as checked luggage. An easily identifiable tag of your own is the best for this.

Even though you’re going to be carrying it on, it’s always best to have a way to identify carry-on luggage to tell it apart from the luggage of other travelers…. so a name tag in a bright color or one laminated with a big picture of your pet or something like that will make it legal and identifiable at a glance to you.

If you don’t have a tag, you can always use one of those paper tags that they have at airline counters. Put one of those on anyway… it will add to the “uniqueness” of your bag.

You don’t always have that carry-on bag with you. Once you get to your destination, it may ride in the back of a shared minibus or in the storage compartment under an airporter bus. Chances are that it won’t go missing, but if you have identification for your carry-on luggage, you will at least have a chance of getting it back if someone else grabs it by mistake.

This is also helpful if you have to leave bags with the hotel because of check out or check in times. It’s important to identify carry-on luggage if you’re on a tour. It will get stored with the carry-on luggage of all the rest of your tour companions. Think what might happen if that bag gets “misplaced” while someone else is transporting it for you….

We once were on a trekking vacation in India. On the bus ride to our trekking destination, our bag was left on the side of the road…. don’t ask how that happened! Several hours after we arrived at our hotel, the Indian army returned our bag to us because it had proper identification on it, and our itinerary inside.

You may find that size and weight restrictions are much stricter abroad than they are at home. We’ve had to check suitcases in China and Europe that we routinely carry on at home. There is no use arguing that you always carry them on. Those airline personnel have the final say… and if they say to check it…. you check it. At least you have the proper identification on it.

Security experts do recommend that your address be covered so unscrupulous people won’t know you are away from home. They even sometimes recommend that you put a business address on the identification tag.

That’s fine, but you want an honest person to be able to contact you, so have a phone number or address or your itinerary where they can find you if necessary.

These issues might be as frustrating as a carry on bag issue, because it is generally relatively tough to fix these problems once they come up, especially if you are in a hurry to access the aircraft.

By acquiring suitcases that will easily adhere to those rules, you can be assured that you won’t deal with any issues when you check in with your luggage at the flight terminal.
